- 1. Service Description
East Hampshire District Council are responsible for the management of the
funeral service and burial operations of its five cemeteries.
The cemeteries are located in the following areas:
- Catherington
- Petersfield
- West Liss
- Whitehill
- Alton
- Am I able to obtain a location plan in the cemetery?
Yes, to obtain a copy for a relevant section the fee is £28.00 and this will
include the individual grave being identified on the map.
- Am I able to reserve a plot?
Unfortunately not, this is due to current land issues. The local authority
is monitoring the situation regarding future burial land.
- Am I allowed to put artificial flowers on a grave?
Yes but for further information on Rules and Regulations please contact Lyn
Hayler 01730 234285/Debbie Wood 01730 234281.
- Am I permitted to carry out a personal search from the Councils Registers?
Yes, for burials prior to computerisation (2002). An appointment should be
made with Lyn Hayler 01730 234285/Debbie Wood 01730 234281.
- Are you re-using graves?
No, however, because we do not know what legislation might come into force
in years to come we cannot say this will never happen. If there is a current
deed for a grave then that grave cannot be re-opened without the consent of the
deed owner. For this reason it is important that every grave has an owner of
the Exclusive Right of Burial.
- Can I have a burial on private land?
Yes, however, the Environment Agency should be informed in case there is a
water course nearby. This can be very complex so for further details contact
Lyn Hayler 01730 234285
- Do we carry out interments on a Saturday?
Yes, but a supplementary fee is payable (currently £131).
- Do we liaise with local residents?
Yes we do and this is through cemetery visitor group meetings which are held
annualy. The public can come along and air their views on how they would like
to see the cemetery service run.
How are these meetings advertised? Notices are placed on the cemetery
noticeboards and also through the local papers.
Enquiries can be addressed to Lyn Hayler on 01730 234285, by e-mail to lyn_hayler@easthants.gov.uk
- Does the Council have any set rules and regulations?
Yes copies of these can be obtained from Lyn Hayler 01730 234285 / Debbie
Wood 01730 234281

- Does the Council hold burial records for the local churchyards?
No, the vicar of the relevant Church should be contacted or alternatively
contact the Winchester Record Office Sussex Street Winchester on 01962 846154
who may be able to help.
- Does the Council hold the burial records for all the cemeteries in East Hampshire?
No, we only hold records for the five cemeteries in the Council's ownership
namely, Petersfield (Ramshill), West Liss, Whitehill, Alton and
Catherington.
All the records have now been computerised.
- Does the Local Authority carry out family tree research?
Yes, however there is a fee payable of £28 which includes a copy of a map
for the relevant area
- How long after an interment has taken place can a headstone be erected?
Alton, Petersfield and West Liss we recommend twelve months, this is to
allow for ground settlement. Whitehill, Catherington and some areas of West
Liss have concrete runners, therefore, headstones can be fitted as soon after
the burial as required.
- What happens if the deed expires?
The Exclusive Right of Burial deed is for thirty years, however, we
recommend this is renewed every five years. Once the lease has expired the
grave will then fall into ownership of the local authority.
- What happens if the owner of the Exclusive Right of Burial has died?
Ownership of the Exclusive Right of Burial can be transferred via the
deceased's estate. The means of a transfer can be very complex and there is a
set procedure to follow. If a transfer is required you will have to contact
Lyn Hayler 01730 234285 who will arrange for the transfer to take place
compliant with the Law
