    The Profile of East Hampshire

    Location

    East Hampshire lies at the heart of South East England. Conveniently located between London and the South Coast, the district offers an excellent location with easy access to national and international markets. The district’s internationally recognised natural and historic heritage is home to a vibrant modern economy with a strong tradition of innovation and an active entrepreneurial business community.

    The District and the People

    East Hampshire is largely rural with 3 towns (Alton, Petersfield and Whitehill & Bordon and 39 Parishes. The area has a total land mass of 514 sq km and a population of 110,100 (Nomis, 2006) with over 4000 businesses and employment for 30,000 people together with about 6500 people in self employment. (Source: National Statistics Online – www.statistics.gov.uk). The population of East Hampshire is expected to increase by 9.1% to 119,240 by 2026 (Whitehill & Bordon Baseline study, 2005).

The district has a reasonably strong economy marked by sustained growth and low unemployment. The economic buoyancy of the area is reflected in the density and variety of business activity ranging from the agricultural base through to information technology and business services. Economic activity is particularly strong in advanced manufacturing, business services, tourism and leisure industries. The economic activity is concentrated in the towns of Alton, Petersfield and Whitehill and the larger villages of Horndean, Liphook, Liss and Four Marks. In the countryside, agriculture remains an important sector of the local economy. More recently, the district has seen particularly strong growth in the small and medium sized business sector with considerable growth in self-employment and new business start-ups.
