    Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life at Chawton near Alton. Here she wrote or revised all her novels, the most famous of which must be Pride and Prejudice.

    A walk from Chawton to Farringdon taking in points of literary interest can be downloaded from our walking page. A festival celebrating the works of Jane Austen and the life of her day takes place in Alton and Chawton in June  - find out more about the Jane Austen Regency Festival.  2009 sees the bicentenary of Jane Austen's move to Chawton.

    "Our Chawton home - how much we find
    Already in it, to our mind,
    And how convinced that when complete,
    It will all other places beat,
    That ever have been made or mended,
    With rooms concise or rooms distended."
