Cycle Training
Many people would love to get out on their bikes for an enjoyable bike ride in their local area but are often too afraid to cycle on today's roads. This is where cycle training may be able to help.
On this page you will find information about local cycle training sessions being delivered in the area and also a link to the Cyclist's Touring Club (CTC) website where you will find a list of independent cycle instructors you can contact for private or group cycle training sessions.
The Road Safety Team at Hampshire County Council also offer cycle training sessions and more information can be found on HCC's website.
National Standard Cycle Training
National Standard Cycle Training is being described as 'cycling proficiency for the 21st Century' and is a great way for children and adults alike to develop their cycle skills whilst also increasing their cycling confidence. There are 3 levels associated with this form of training including;
Level 1 - Off-road cycle skills
Usually undertaken off-road on a playground, tennis courts or unused car park where basic skills will be taught and assessed such as starting and stopping safely, taking either hand off the handlebars, looking over each shoulder and basic manoevres.
Level 2 - On quiet roads
Once your instructor is confident that you can control your bike, they will take you out onto quiet roads to further develop your skills and put your basic skills to the test in real-life conditions. Following Level 2 sessions you will be able to start and stop safely on roads, overtake parked cars and turn left and right from minor into major roads and major into minor roads. You may like to use your route to work or school within the training.
Level 3 - On busier roads and in towns
You should now be able to control your bike effectively and have developed your confidence when cycling on quiet roads. Now is the time to develop your skills further by taking you out into busier traffic conditions and develop you skills in more complex traffic conditions such as one-way systems, traffic lights, roundabouts and road junctions.
