Alton Cemetery
Alton Cemetery is situated on Old Odiham Road, a short distance from the Parish Church of St. Lawrence.
It is the oldest cemetery owned by East Hampshire District Council, as it was opened in 1856. Within the grounds are a large lych-gate and a bier store (a bier is the wagon traditionally used to move a coffin to the grave). The cemetery also contains the grave of “sweet Fanny Adams”, who was famously brutally murdered in the 1800’s.
Throughout the cemetery, there are tap points and refuse bins for your use.
Cars may be parked alongside the entrance road (please do not cause an obstruction) or for those visiting graves in the new section, you may take you car into the area. Please keep to the roads, even when turning or you may cause damage to graves.
