    Cemetery Service

peonyOur cemetery service offers practical advice and support for those who have been recently bereaved and also to others who may wish to visit our cemeteries.

If you are arranging a funeral and are using a funeral director, they will be able to offer a comprehensive service, including sensitive advice and information. However you are still welcome to contact the Cemetery Officer for any other help, information or reassurance that you need at this difficult time.

The Cemetery Manager is available during normal office hours and is based at the Council Offices Penns Place, Petersfield Hants GU31 4EX.

    Tel: 01730 234285

Council run cemeteries in East Hampshire

East Hampshire District Council owns and maintains five cemeteries:

    • Alton (Old Odiham Road)
    • Catherington (Catherington Road)
    • Petersfield (Ramshill)
    • West Liss (Church Street)
    • Whitehill (Hollywater Road)

All of the cemeteries are open 24 hours, although we do reserve the right to close them from time to time.

During adverse weather conditions such as heavy snow fall, it may be necessary to suspend burials within our cemeteries. Where this arises we will be in contact with the relevant families and funeral directors as soon as possible.

In addtion, the access roads and pathways in some of the cemeteries may become inaccessible or dangerous during for example heavy snowfall. These areas may not necessarily be the first priority for clearance. Members of the public will be advised not to visit Council Cemeteries during periods of severe adverse weather such as heavy snowfall because of the risks of accidents. However, in this unlikely event, notices will be displayed.

Dogs are permitted within the cemeteries but for the benefit of all visitors, do please keep them on a lead and ensure that any fouling is cleaned up.

The cemeteries are a place of quiet contemplation and reflection. As such, any person creating a disturbance, interfering with a burial or grave (including memorials, mementoes and plants) will be required to leave the cemetery and legal action may be taken against them.
