    Take on the climate challenge!

Climate changeClimate change is the biggest challenge facing us today. Rising global   temperatures will bring changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and an increase of extreme weather. The effects will be felt here in the UK and internationally.

The UK is acting now to adapt to climate change and to reduce the risk by reducing our contribution to the causes.

    What is climate change?

Climate is the average weather experienced over a long period. This includes temperature, wind and rainfall patterns. The climate of the Earth is always changing. In the past it has altered as a result of natural causes.

    Adaption to climate change

Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases will remain for a fairly long time in the atmosphere. This means that however much we reduce greenhouse gases now, there will be some elements of climate change, which is inevitable. As well as cutting down emissions, we must also adapt to unavoidable climate change.

    What the UK is doing

The Climate Change Programme, published in 2006, sets out the policies and priorities for action in the UK and internationally.

    What EHDC is doing
