With the wide ranging services that Environmental Protection provide, it is no surprise that we enforce a wide range of law. Below are links to the most commonly used laws:

For all statutory nuisances, noise, bonfires, light, odours etc. please refer to sections 79-83 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, on the following link

The legal reponsibilities placed on Local Authorities with regard to air quality and contaminated land are covered in the Environment Act 1995, which amended the earlier Environmental Protection Act 1990, check part II for contaminated land and part IV for air quality here

Creating dark or black smoke on industrial or trade premises is a direct offence under the Clean Air Act 1993, look at section 2 of the act for details, click here

For dog fouling, the Dog (Fouling on Land) Act 1996 created the offence of allowing the dog to foul click here.

Although the recent Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005 created additional powers to create dog orders (and also created the pest and light statutory nuisances) click here

Royal assent was given in November 2006 for the Animal Welfare Act 2006 for details of the powers of this act, click here
