    Pest Control - Fleas

The Pest Control Team offers a service for the treatment of fleas in buildings.

See our Fees and charges table for more information on what it might cost.

    When to book

If you have already tried treatments yourself that haven't worked, please be aware we cannot offer a new treatment for any premises that has been previously treated until 6 weeks have elapsed .

This is because using our insecticides on top of other pesticides could cause an overdose of insecticide and/or could combine to make an illegal and unsafe mixture of chemicals.

This does not apply to treatment of pets.

Before the Pest Management Officer arrives

    1. Check and treat pets for fleas with prescribed medication from your vet.
    2. All pets, including hamsters, tropical fish and caged birds must be removed from your premises for at least 4 hours. The pesticides we use can be initially harmful to these pets. If you are unable to remove large fish/ fish tanks, (this includes pumps and accessories associated with the tank) then it should be covered with a damp towel.
    3. All unwrapped food, eg fruit, bread, etc, sugar bowls, milk jug, butter dish and so on must be stored in cupboards or the fridge where it cannot be contaminated with the pesticide .
    4. TV and other electrical equipment should be covered to prevent them from becoming wet and unplug from the mains supply.
    5. All furniture should be moved away from walls so that the Pest Management Officer can spray around skirting boards. All belongings should be lifted from the floors to allow access for the treatment. The success of the treatment will depend upon how much of the room the Pest Management Officer can access easily. The Officer will not normally move furnishings and belongings for the customer.
    6. You should vacuum all areas of your property prior to your appointment.

    After the treatment

You must not be present in the room during the treatment to ensure that you are not exposed to the pesticide that we use. You should remain outside the property for at least 4 hours.

It is also advised that when entering the property after treatment that windows are opened to allow the room to thoroughly ventilate.

The insecticide will not stain carpets and furniture. Once the insecticide is dry it might leave a white residue which will dust or vacuum off.

Please remember not to vacuum your house for two weeks as this will prevent the pesticide from working effectively.

You may see the occasional flea for up to 6 weeks after treatment. But please don't worry, the insecticide needs time to work and control the problem.

How to prevent fleas in future

There are some simple measures you can take to control a repeat minor flea infestation yourself:

    • thoroughly vacuum all infested clothing and bedding
    • thoroughly clean the infested area by vacuuming carpet edges and soft furnishings and remove all accumulations which may act as a breeding site
    • empty your cleaner after vacuuming pests otherwise the pests will find their way back into your property
