Make Your Vote Count on 5 May 2011
Elections to East Hampshire District Council and local parish councils take place every four years. The next elections will be on May 5.
This year’s election is one of the most important for local government and for the country so please use your vote.
For local government, this is your chance to vote for councillors who will make the right decisions at a time of financial pressure.
Vote on Democracy
Thursday 5 May will bring the first national referendum in over 30 years. This will be a crucial vote on how we elect candidates to Parliament.
Alternative Vote (AV): Voters rank the candidates. If no candidate has 50% of first preferences then second preferences are counted and so on until someone has a majority.
First-past-the-post (FPTP): People get a single vote for who they want to represent their constituency and whichever candidate gets the most votes wins.
How do I Vote?
Provided you are registered you can vote:
- in person at your polling station
- by post, anyone can opt for a postal vote
- by proxy – this is when you appoint a person to vote on your behalf
- There are also arrangements for overseas and service voters.
Make sure you are registered
You needed to register before Thursday 14 April 2011.
