    Can my claim be backdated?

    As a result of the changes to the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit claiming process for Pension Credit customers, the maximum backdating time limit for Housing Benefit and council Tax Benefit has been reduced.

    Pension Age customers

    For Pension Age and Pension Credit ccustomers the maximum backdating period for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit has been reduced from 52 weeks to 3 months from 6 October 2008 .

    Working Age customers

    For Working Age customers and those on Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance (Income Based) the maximum backdating period for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit has been reduced from 52 weeks to 6 months from 6 October 2008.

    A request to backdate your claim for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit must be made in writing. You must have a good reason for not applying earlier. You can request backdated benefit on the Housing and Council Tax benefit claim form when you make your claim.  Alternatively you can email your request to the Benefit Section here at East Hampshire District Council at benefits@easthants.gov.uk.  Please make sure that you provide us with the following information:

    • Your full name and address
    • The period you wish your benefit claim to be backdated for
    • The reason for not applying for benefit earlier 

    We may need to contact you for further information.
