    Bus Routes

    a) A3 Bus Corridor

The A3 Bus Priority Scheme is a government funded initiative that links Clanfield with Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth along the old A3 route. Buses run every 15 minutes; their journey time has been considerably reduced by giving them bus lanes along sections of the route. Zip bus on the A3 Bus Corridor

The aim is to provide a reliable, safe, clean and frequent bus service that will help to reduce the thousands of car journeys made into and out of Portsmouth every day. Bus operator First has purchased a new fleet of buses, which are low-floor and have disabled access. The scheme is due for completion in early 2008.

There are a number of advantages for bus users:

    • Enhanced waiting facilities, including new high quality bus shelters with seating, lighting, CCTV, electronic real time displays with audio relay and information points giving travel details
    • Public information terminals with provision for smart card technology
    • Large print timetables and tactile paving for the visually impaired
    • High kerbs at bus stops for level access
    • Bus priority at major junctions and bus lanes to improve service reliability

Cyclists also benefit from the following:

    • The bus lanes are designed for cyclists to use also. The speed limits will be reduced along the route to 30mph to make it safer for cyclists.
    • Where there are no bus lanes and there is sufficient space, on- and off-road cycle routes will be provided.
    • New toucan crossings will help cyclists to cross the road
    • Additional cycle parking is being provided at local shops and churches

Pedestrians will gain from the following:

    • New pedestrian refuges
    • Pelican crossings upgraded to puffin crossings for increased safety
    • Tactile paving on all side road crossings
    • New footway surfacing and kerbs
