Actors wanted to re-live Greenham Protests
The Proteus theatre group based at Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke, are looking for budding actors to join them in a play based on the experiences of people living near the Greenham Common protests of 25 years ago.
In the era of Margaret Thatcher, the Falklands war and Charles & Diana, a handful of ordinary women set up a Peace Camp to protest against NATO’s decision to site cruise missiles on the Berkshire/Hampshire borders. It was the start of a lengthy protest lasting 19 years and, at its height, involving more than 50,000 people. Primitive conditions, camp fire songs, mass demonstrations and non-violent direct action were the trademarks of this fascinating campaign which drew the attention of the international media.
Rehearsals begin in June and Proteus is looking for people to play the campaigners, the police, the American military and the anti-protestors. There are two rehearsal times to choose from, in the afternoons (4.30pm – 6.30pm) or in the evenings (7pm – 9pm). Performances take place on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th July in the grounds of Queen Mary’s College, Basingstoke.
To find out more contact Ross at Proteus on 01256 354541, email info@proteustheatre.com, or turn up to a registration evening on 7th June, either at 4.30pm or 7pm.
