Old Fashioned Cricket returns to The Butts, Alton
Once again 9 local teams will be competing for the Bushy Leaze Trophy in the Old Fashioned Cricket competition which takes place on the Butts in Alton on Sunday July 1st at 10 o’clock. This charity contest is one of the highlights of the Alton summer when men and women folk dress up and compete in a cricket match played with authentic bat, ball and stumps.
This year all monies raised will go to Bushy Leaze, the primary school in Alton for children with special needs. The money raised will help to fund the Soft play Area in the school.
The Alton Town Mayor traditionally bowls the first ball of the day and then the teams slug it out in a limited overs league competition while dressed in Period Costume. The two highest scoring teams then play in the final. The rules require at least one lady in the team and all team members must be dressed in a yesteryear style. The holders, The Kings Head, will be defending the Trophy against a strong line up of teams from the local community.
The event attracts visitors from all over the County. Side shows, stalls, childrens rides and a bouncy castle as well as various food and drinks stalls, all add to the enjoyment of the day. Live Music from Alton College is also being organised in the grounds of the French Horn.
Raffle tickets will be on sale on the day and before hand via the teams taking part. This year the first prize will be 500 guineas.
