ACSOs are employed by Hampshire County Council and wear a Home Office badge to clearly identify them to members of the public. The uniform is similar to that of the police and PCSOs. They patrol in vans equipped with CCTV as well as on foot to provide a reassuring presence in the community and act as a deterrent to anti-social behaviour.

Officers have the power to request the name and address of offenders and failure to comply makes them liable to arrest by a police officer. They also have the power to confiscate alcohol and cigarettes from young people who are under-age, require the removal of abandoned vehicles and enforce laws on fly-tipping. Officers also provide information and direct people to other local services.

They help to monitor acceptable behaviour agreements (ABAs) and enforce anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs). The officers act as professional witnesses where there are breaches of such orders and provide evidence when they witness criminal behaviour.
