    Calling the police

    police in Alton High StreetSometimes people can get confused about which number to call when they want to talk to the police.

    Calling 999

    If life is threatened, people are injured, crime is in progress or offenders are nearby, you should always call 999.

    Calling 101

    Please call the Force Enquiry Centre on 101 if you wish to report a crime that is not an emergency (ie crime that is not life threatening and not happening now).

    Calls to 101 cost 10p.

    When you report a crime to 101 you can ask for a police RMS reference number (Record Management System number) at the time of calling.

    Contacting your local police officer (non urgent - if urgent always call 999 )

    If you want to contact your local police officer, you can call 0845 045 45 45. Tell the operator who you want to contact, and a message will be passed on to the officer asking them to contact you. The operator will also be able to put you through to the Force Enquiry Centre dealing with general enquiries and crime reports, who will be able to tell you when the officer will next be on duty.   Alternatively, you can email your officer and ask them to contact you:
