Food Safety
The Food Safety Service has the responsibility for enforcing food safety legislation in relation to the some 850 food premises in the district ranging from small mobile catering units to large scale food production. Legislation seeks to ensure that food businesses produce and sell food that is safe to eat. The service carries out this work by undertaking programmed food hygiene inspections, sampling food and by investigating complaints relating to food or food premises.
The service is jointly responsible along with the Primary Care Trust for investigating infectious diseases such as food poisoning. We also respond to food safety incidents notified by the Food Standards Agency.
The service provides food safety training for food handlers, gives advice to food businesses and the public and promotes food safety through various initiatives.
