    Did you know that the number of germs on your hands doubles after using the toilet? - yet up to half of all men and a quarter of women fail to wash their hands after they've been to the toilet!!!

    When to wash your hands

    Before starting work
    Before preparing any food
    Before touching raw food or high risk food

    After coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose
    After going to the toilet
    After handling any pets or animals including cleaning out cages and fish tanks
    After handling raw eggs in their shell

    Working in the garden After touching your hair or face

    How to wash your hands

    You would be suprised how many people think that running the tips of their fingers under cold water counts as washing. Germs know better!!!
    • Always use warm water.
    • It is better to wet hands before applying soap as this prevents irritation.
    • Apply soap. Liquid soap is preferable as a bar of soap may carry bacteria left by previous users.
    • Rub hands together vigorously for about 15 seconds, making sure both sides of the hands are washed thoroughly, around the thumbs, between each finger and around and under the nails, using a clean nail brush.
    • Then, rinse with clean warm water.
    • Germs spread more easily if hands are wet so it important to dry them thoroughly. Use a clean dry towel, paper towel or air dryer. Paper towels are best. Never dry your hands on a tea towel or your clothing.
    If you use disposable gloves for food preparation you must remember that they get just as dirty as your hands. You must therefore change them between handling different food items or between different jobs. You must also wash your hands after wearing them as they often leave a residue.
