Health is very important in the workplace. There are precautions that can be taken in the workplace to minimise risk of health problems caused by the work environment.

    Backs

Back problems are one of the most common health problems in the workplace. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in partnership with Local Authorities are running a national campaign to tackle back pain in the workplace.

More information about caring for your back can be found on the Backcare website. Backcare is an independent national charity that help people manage and prevent back pain.

    Dermatitis

Dermatitis is not passed on, instead it can develop at any time, or not at all - everyone is different. There are two types of contact dermatitis: irritant contact dermatitis & allergic contact dermatitis. A lot of hairdressers suffer from this due to their frequent contact with shampoos and colourants.

    Display screens

Display screen users need to be assessed to ensure they have the correct posture when using display screen equipment. They also need to have regular eye tests to ensure no damage is being done to their eyesight, and to prevent eye strain.

    Legionella

Legionnaires' disease is a type of pneumonia. It is an uncommon but serious disease caught by inhaling small droplets of water suspended in the air which contain the Legionella bacterium.

Please also look at our cooling towers pages for more information and about the regulations.

    Health initiatives

Many employers are extending their general responsibilities to staff by introducing health initiatives aimed at improving health awareness and habits. The advantages for the employer are a healthier, more settled and more committed work force. Areas to consider are:

    - Smoking
    - Alcohol and drugs
    - Healthy eating
    - Violence
    - Physical fitness

There are various other issues that are not specifically legislated for which can effect health. These include individuals' management style, opportunities for training or personal development, facilities for providing support and opportunities for getting involved in decision making. Failure to consider these issues may result in increased levels of stress for some employees.
