Who's it for?
EHDC's 'Think Safe!' event has become one of the most successful child safety events in Hampshire, targeting its safety message at Year 6 children (10 -11 year olds) from primary & junior schools throughout our district. Each year, between 700-800 children arrive by coach from the various schools across East Hampshire to our current venue, which is situated within the beautiful surroundings of the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. Schools attending Thinksafe! Are often full of praise for the event and are eager to bring their pupils back year after year.
Think Safe! scenarios
On arrival the children receive a safety briefing before being organised into small groups of 10 children, which are then sent off to participate in the various scenarios.
There are eight different scenarios in total, each lasting approximately 15 minutes. Teachers are encouraged to observe rather than follow the children to each activity. This encourages the children to make their own decisions and not to simply look towards a familiar adult to provide the answers.

After the event
Once the groups have participated in all of the scenarios, they reassemble in the briefing room where they are involved in a short question and answer session relating to the activities they have taken part in.
As the children depart they are each given an information pack containing a workbook and other safety and health information relevant to their experiences from the event.
Teachers are also recieve an information pack which includes workbooks and ideas for activities that can be organised back in the classroom to reinforce the ‘Think Safe!’ message.
One of the resources that will be available from this years event is the Think Safe ! DVD package which includes 10 interactive films and a teachers guidance booklet, each of the films relate to issues which children may or may not come across as they get more freedom. The package is known to have already assisted in the reduction of crime in Hampshire relating to knife & imitation firearms , other Police forces throughout the county are also set to use this unique resource.
