    Young person's guidance

What do I have to do?

The employer needs to carry out the risk assessment before the young person starts work to see where risk remains taking in to account control measures already in place.

For young workers the risk assessment needs to pay attention to areas of risk  which are:

    1. Beyond his phyisical or psychological capacity
    2. Involving harmful exposure to agents which are toxic or carciogenic, cause hertiable genetic damage or harm to the unborn child or which in any other way chronically affect human health
    3. Involve the risk of accidents which it may reasonably  be assumed cannot be recognised or avoided by young persons owing to their lack of attention to safety or lack of experience or training
    4. They shall also not be exposed to extreme cold, heat, noise or vibration.

Where a significant risk still exists, a child below the Mininmum School Leaving Age (MSLA)  must not be employed.

However a young person above the MSLA can be employed if it is necessary for their training and he or she is supervised by a competent person, and the risk has been reduced to its lowest level - which must be reasonable and practicable.
