    Choosing a ladder

When you choose your ladder, make sure you consider the following:

Will it be suitable for you to do your work comfortably without over-reaching?

Will it be strong enough for the work you want to do?

    Ladder weight bearing guidelines

Class 1 (Industrial) maximum static vertical load 175kg (27.5 stone)

Class 3 (Domestic) maximum static vertical load 125kg (19.5 stone)

When using the ladder, follow these safety guidelines:

Check for visible signs of damage (stiles, structural damage etc).

Are the rubber or plastic feet all safely in position. Any missing ones must be replaced.

Make sure all the steps are clean and dry.

    Wear flat, firm shoes

    Check for overhead hazards

Check that the stepladder is locked in position.

Rest it on a firm and level base. If working outside place a large flat board on any soft ground to make a suitable base.

Position it front on to the work

    Never work sideways

When working keep a secure grip at all times

Never have more than one person on the ladder

    Take care of loose tools

Always have both feet on a step never stand on the top hand rail.

    Never over reach
