Unpleasant incidents at work, such as verbal or physical abuse, can cause stress and anxiety as well as physical injury. Businesses should provide a system for staff to report incidents of this nature to their manager, who should then make a record and investigate further.
As with any other hazardous situation affecting workers, employers should carry out risk assessments and introduce appropriate controls. These may include improving the design of the building, providing staff with training and information, changing the nature of certain jobs or reducing the handling of cash.
