Private Sector Housing - Safer Homes

The Private Sector Housing Team are happy to provide advice and support to all residents to help make homes safer in the district.

Private Tenants  - If you are a Private Tenant with concerns about housing conditions use this link.

Grants - Unfortunately there are no longer any grants available from this council specifically for property repairs, but low income, or vulnerable households may be eligible for a Home Safety Grant (HSG) for an urgent safety issue, which can in some circumstances include home repairs.

Housing Act 2004 - Under the Housing Act 2004, we have a duty to keep the housing conditions in the area under review. To assist with this responsibility, periodically we comission a 'Stock condition survey'.  Either as a result of that general stock condition survey, or for some other reason such as a complaint from a tenant or a neighbour, we can inspect a property if we have reason to think that a health or safety hazard exists there. We are now required to use a 'risk assessment' method called the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS), to assess all housing condition issues.

Immigration Certificates - If you require a 'certificate' to confirm that you have suitable living accommodation to sponsor someone for immigration purposes, please contact the Private Sector Housing Team. They will carry out a Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) inspection to check there are no significant problems with the property and that it would not become overcrowded by the addition of the sponsored person(s). If all is found to be well a formal letter will be issued to that effect. Currently there is no charge for this service.
