Gambling
The Gambling Act 2005 came into effect on 1 September 2007. It comprehensively modernised the law on gambling. The regulatory system governs the provision of all gambling in Great Britain, other than the National Lottery and spread betting.
Licensing authorities have responsibility for granting premises licences for:
- casinos
- bingo halls
- betting offices
- adult gaming centres
- licensed family entertainment centres
and granting permits for:
- gaming and gaming machines in clubs
- unlicensed family entertainment centres
- gaming machines in alcohol licensed premises
and authorising:
- the temporary use of premises

Gambling policy
It is a requirement of the Gambling Act 2005 that licensing authorities review their Gambling Policy, known as a ‘Statement of Principles’, every three years. We are now consulting on the draft policy for 2013 - 2016. Consultation ends on the 29 November 2012. When complete, all necessary amendments will be made and the final document presented to Full Council for approval on the 13 December 2012.
