    Clinical Waste Collections

Requests for new Healthcare (Clinical) Waste Collections must be made by a healthcare professional such as your GP.Infectious (Orange) Sack

Healthcare Waste can be classified into the following categories:

    Infectious Waste inc. Sharps (syringes/needles)

East Hampshire District Council currently makes separate weekly or on demand collections of infectious waste (via orange sacks and yellow sharps boxes) from domestic properties.

Sacks and boxes are exchanged on a like for like basis, ie if two sacks are put out for collection, two empty ones will be left to replace them.

Please note existing customers who require a collection of sharps will be asked to obtain a referral form from their healthcare professional prior to their next collection.

    Offensive / Hygiene Waste

Hygiene waste such as sanitary waste, nappies, incontinence pads and other waste produced from human hygiene can be disposed of via the wheeled bin for rubbish collection.

This waste is both non-infectious and non-hazardous and therefore does not require specialist treatment or disposal, thus disposal through your fortnightly rubbish bin is possible.

However, if you find that your current refuse capacity is insufficient for your requirements we may be able to approve additional capacity.  Should that be agreed please be aware that you may have to buy that additional bin.

Liquid offensive / hygiene waste should be disposed of through the normal sewage system.

Cytotoxic or Cytostatic WasteCytotoxic Sharps Box

East Hampshire District Council also provides an on demand collection service for this type of waste (Purple Lid sharps box).

These boxes will not be exchanged on a like for like basis as they can be provided on prescription with the medicine/sharps that have been prescribed by the Healthcare professional.

    To arrange a collection....

..of Infectious your healthcare professional (Doctor, District Nurse, Hospital or Primary Care Trust (PCT)) will need to fill out the referral form on your behalf and send this to us.

Your healthcare professional is the only person qualified to correctly assess your waste and therefore we are unable to arrange a collection without their referral form.

Waste produced through treatment in the home by a healthcare professional will not be collected by EHDC as it should be removed by the healthcare professional.

Full details of the "Healthcare Waste Collection Protocol", adopted by all Hampshire Councils and the local NHS trusts is attached below, along with the "Healthcare Waste Collection Referral Form" which your healthcare professional should have access to and must fill out and return in order for collections to be arranged.
