    Street cleaning

litter vanYou may have spotted our streetcare contractors, English Landscapes, out and about in the district sporting the Clean and Green logos. Here’s what they achieve each and every week of the year:

    • 20 fly tips cleared, most in less than 24 hours – larger fly tips within 10 working days
    • 250 different roads swept
    • 800 litter bins emptied, plus cigarette bins – litter bins in shopping areas emptied daily
    • 1,000 bags of litter collected
    • 500,000 square metres cut of highway verge and open space grass

The council is responsible for cleaning all public highways within the district, as well as its own land and public car parks.

Whitehill and Bordon's electric street cleaner

If you live in the Whitehill Bordon area you may well have seen Neil sweeping the streets with the smart electric vehicle we are running in partnership with Whitehill Parish Council who store the vehicle in their garage and charge it up overnight. This quiet vehicle has many advantages. Its use has reduced the amount of fuel required, and allowed other team members to do more work over a wider area. This means they can be more responsive to your calls.

The amount of litter collected in the area where the vehicle is in use has reduced and the standard of cleanliness achieved is being measured to see if this type of equipment could be used more widely in future.

In Alton, Petersfield, Clanfield and Horndean a new pavement sweeper has been on trial and if successful this too could be suitable for use in other areas.

    Autumn leaves

In addition to the usual street cleaning services, the months from October to December see the annual collection of leaf fall by the council’s contractor English Landscapes. Once gathered up the leaves are taken for composting – each year more than 200 tonnes are composted from these collections.

    Our targets

The council has set itself a target of making sure at least 90% of the district's roads and public open spaces are maintained, on average, at either an excellent or good level of cleanliness.

This is considerably higher than the government target for England, which is 75%.

    Fallen trees

If the tree is causing an obstruction on the highway and is a danger to vehicles you will need to contact Hampshire County Council, Area Surveyor's Office on 08456 035 633

If the tree/branch is on the verge and not a danger to vehicles then we can arrange to have it removed. Please contact Customer Services on 0300 300 0013 and advise us of the exact location.

    Litter on roads and pavements

If you see rubbish scattered over the pavement we will ask our contractors to clean it up. If the amount of litter is considerable it should be dealt with within 12 hours in normal residential roads, and within a maximum of 6 hours in main shopping areas. We can also remove a shopping trolley if it has been abandoned, but please contact the supermarket it came from if the name is visible on the trolley.

If there is glass on pavements or roads, or if the litter is likely to cause a hazard to pedestrians the council can also arrange for its removal outside normal working hours.

    Litter bins

If the litter bins are on the public footway (pavement) or on an area of EHDC public open space then the bin will be emptied by EHDC's contractors.

A number of Parish and Town Councils also own litter bins, which they site on areas such as recreation grounds and parks. The responsibility for emptying these bins lies with the respective Parish or Town Council.

The attached file 'Bin List' contains a list of all litter and dog waste bins in the district. Those owned and emptied by parish and town councils are highlighted in orange.
