Glass collection box

Kerbside Glass Collection Service

We run this service to help us be more environmentally friendly. A new glass jar or bottle can be made from 90% recycled glass, using less energy and reduced CO2
emissions.

Our residents simply put the box containing their bottles and jars out for collection by 7am at their usual collection point on the appropriate recycling day. The collection is every other black (recycling) bin collection day, which means it is once every four weeks.

What can be put in the box?

Rinsed out glass bottles and jars – no tops or corks please, but labels are not a problem. All colours can be put in together.

What CANNOT be put in the box?

Pyrex, light bulbs, glass panes, lead crystal glass and of course any non-glass items. Broken glass should be carefully wrapped and put into your refuse bin.

If your box cannot be taken because it contains the wrong items you will be left a message explaining the reasons. You will then have to wait until the next glass collection to put
your box out again.

Too much glass?

Only glass contained within the EHDC box can be collected. If you regularly have too much to fit in the box please contact us and we will deliver a second one to you for £5.00 including delivery, or £2.00 when collected from the Council offices at Penns Place.

Please continue to use the bottle banks for larger quantities of bottles and jars.

Why do we need another container?

We need to collect glass separately from the other recyclables because it is processed at a different place.

Where does the glass go?

The glass bottles and jars will be sent to a hi-tech reprocessing plant in Southampton. Then colour sorted,
crushed, sold and transported to companies producing new bottles, jars, drinking glasses, sandpaper and road aggregates.

Properties that cannot be reached by the standard collection truck

Plastic boxes have been distributed to around 1,800 properties across the district that cannot be reached by the standard collection trucks. A smaller truck will collect glass from these properties. Specific collection arrangements for glass apply to these properties and were provided to residents when they received their box.

Communal Properties

170 bins have been distributed to the communal properties throughout the district during the summer. This gives residents in communal properties shared facilities for storing glass before it is collected for recycling.

Collection timetables

Forgotten when your glass box collection day is, or lost the calendar you received with the box? You can find out your collection day using the on-line Recycling & Refuse Collection Timetable

Please see the FAQs for more information.
