Eco-town could regenerate Whitehill and Bordon
Things are happening in Whitehill and Bordon with a good chance of Eco-town status for the area.
If we are selected this will bring central Government finance and support to deliver our Green Town Vision.
We aim to make Whitehill and Bordon a great place to live, a model 21st century town with the mix of homes, public transport and town centre facilities people need whilst also protecting green space .
District Council Leader and Chairman of the Opportunity Group, Ferris Cowper, has made it clear that local people will be consulted every step of the way.
On 24th July 2008 over 200 residents attended a public meeting. It was made clear that if we did not act to create a masterplan for the area then housing development would be likely to take place in any case as Ministry of Defence land will not just be left empty.
But the group does not wish to let piecemeal development result in more housing without the facilities, jobs, transport or town centre that the town needs.
The Opportunity is about using the MOD land to regenerate the town as a whole with an overall plan that will make Whitehill and Bordon a great place to live without damage to the environment.
Eco-town status would be an ideal mechanism to deliver the Green Vision and the bid by East Hampshire District Council is working well through the system.
Housing Minister Caroline Flint visited the town on 30th July 2008 to discuss the proposals with Council Leader Ferrris Cowper, the MOD and other members of the Opportunity Group.
Her final decision on the Whitehill/Bordon bid is expected early in 2009.
