Building control
The building control team deals with issues relating to building work and construction, including making sure that buildings are safe.
A large part of the team’s work is checking that new buildings meet minimum standards, in areas such as design, building work, health and safety, energy conservation and access for disabled people.
You need to make separate applications for building regulations and planning permission for most new buildings. The building control team deals with building regulations submissions and is a separate department to the planning department. The team carries out site visits as part of this process.
You also need to contact the building control team if you are making major changes to an existing building, such as taking down a load-bearing wall or demolishing it.
If you need to report a dangerous building or structure, you should contact the council's Building Control team on 01730 266551 during 9am-5pm. Outside of these hours you should call 07850 358156.
Please note that the council operates a limited out of hours service and may not always be able to assist.
