Search

You can search our site in a number of different ways.
On the homepage:
The top righthand box brings together a number of different ways to search. The top box is a keyword search – just type in the word you are looking for. Underneath you can search the A-Z of council services – click on the letter for the service you are looking for and it will bring up a list with links to the relevant information. You can also type in your postcode to get a list of your nearest services ranging from car parks, dentists and doctors to places of worship. On every page:
In the top bar you will see menu options ‘I want to’, ‘Local services’, ‘Local info’, ‘A-Z’ and ‘Contact us’. You can also search by typing a keyword into the box on the right hand side and clicking the ‘search’ button.

Accessibility

We have made every effort to ensure this web site is easily readable using 'plain english'.

Our target is to meet or exceed W3C's Web Accessibility standards and guidelines (Level AA) to ensure that this site can be used as easily as possible by everyone. The current exceptions are some of the map software and some pages on licensing. The software providers are looking at accessibility issues in relation to these. If you have any difficulty viewing pages, please contact the relevant service area.

We continually review our site and modify pages to remove accessibility problems for people with disabilities and to make information more accessible for all users. If users experience problems we would like to know so that it can make corrections where necessary. If you find areas of the site that difficult to access please use the feedback form to let us know.

Resizing text

The website has been designed to allow you to resize the page text if you want to. To do this on Internet Explorer, go to the View menu > text size. On Netscape, go to the View menu > text zoom (or increase).

Using the interactive map

The council’s online map has lots of useful information. If you live in the area you can type in your postcode and find your house, see an aerial photograph of the place where you live, find out where your closest police station or school is, see where there are conservation areas close to your house, which buildings are listed, and all sorts of other interesting facts. If you want to go shopping or visit one of our towns or villages, you can look up the car parks and see how much they cost too.

You can choose if you want to see the information over aerial photographs or OS maps. Once you have found the information you want, you can then print it and keep it.

On the left hand side of the map you will see various options. The main ones are:
The arrows - move you around on the map
The ‘+’ and ‘-‘: zoom in or out
Search – allows you to search for an address or postcode
Layers – lets you add ‘layers’ of information onto the map, like refuse rounds, police stations, village halls and community centres.

RSS feeds

RSS feeds mean you can see when new content has been added without having to check the website because it will automatically be sent to your computer.
To read these feeds you need an RSS reader. There are two main types – readers you download onto your computer – and readers in browsers – for example in igoogle.
Once you have decided on a reader, all you have to do is choose which feed you want. We have plenty on offer! Just click on the (Pic of rss icon) next to the feed you want. We will be adding new ones too in the future, so check back to see what’s changed.
