Whitehill Bordon decision
4th April 2008
Whitehill/Bordon Shortlisted for ECO Town Status
Following a successful bid by East Hampshire District Council Whitehill and Bordon has been short-listed for Eco Town status. It is one of 15 towns, short-listed and if selected as one of the final 10 will receive a great boost in government funding, advice and support.
East Hampshire District Council Leader Cllr Ferris Cowper said:
"It's fantastic news that Whitehill and Bordon has been short-listed to be an eco-town. This national recognition of the town's outstanding potential is a tribute to the hard work of local residents and councillors. It is an endorsement of the excellent quality of our Green Town Vision, which has been driving our plans for Whitehill and Bordon's future since 2004."
"There is still a lot of work to do if the town is to be confirmed in the autumn as one of the ten eco-towns. The government will be holding a public consultation in the next few months, so it is vital that local people get fully involved and back our plans to make Whitehill and Bordon a flagship green town for the 21st century."
"As a district council, we will continue to listen to residents to deliver the vibrant but environmentally friendly town they tell us they want. We will also continue to work with the town council, government and other partners to ensure government, in its widest sense, delivers real improvements."
The district council has been working on proposals for the development of the town for the past four years, since the prospect of the army leaving Whitehill and Bordon was first announced.
Since then the district council with partners from Defence Estates, Hampshire County Council, Whitehill Town Council, the local Town Partnership and government agencies have worked together in consultation with local people to consider the future of the area.
In response to the public demand for better local facilities and for protection of the local environment the group produced the Green Vision for the area. So regardless of what happens we intend to use the principles of Eco Towns to develop Whitehill and Bordon as a modern 21st Century town that respects the environment while providing the facilities that will make it a great place to live.
