EHDC Chairman offers condolences following the passing of Prince Philip

Buckingham Palace has announced that Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has passed away today, aged 99.

EHDC Chairman Cllr Keith Budden, said: “Prince Philip dedicated his life to the service of Great Britain and has been a constant and tireless ambassador for this country and its people.

“His unwavering sense of duty saw him serve with distinction in the Royal Navy and in support of the Queen during her long reign.

“As patron to more than 800 organisations, Prince Philip has done incalculable good for so many people and so many causes, particularly those focused on the environment, industry, sport, and education.

“He was a loyal and loving husband to the Queen and a doting father and grandfather. On behalf of the people of East Hampshire I would like to offer the Royal Family our sincere condolences at this sad loss.”

The council will be writing to the Queen on behalf of the residents of the district offering our condolences.

Due to coronavirus restrictions the council is asking people not to gather or lay flowers in public areas at this time.

Instead, members of the public may wish to consider making a small donation to a charity supported by the Royal Family at this time.

No physical books of condolence will be available to the public but a national book of condolence is expected to be held on the Buckingham Palace webpages https://www.royal.uk/

There will be opportunities to come together and mourn as a community when it is safe to do so.
