The overarching priorities for Alton include:

  • Strengthening its identity and sense of pride of place.
  • Improving public realm in and around the high street.
  • Delivering key sites.
  • Improving walking, cycling and wayfinding routes.
  • Effectively deploying Section 106 and the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) and other funding to support neighbourhood plan objectives and improvements that deliver the most benefit to the town.

Current workstreams

Coors Brewery Site

The Coors Brewery Site is a redevelopment project that aims to transform a large brownfield site in a highly sustainable location into a high quality attractive and inclusive development.

Planning committee took place on 26 November 2020, there was a unanimous resolution to grant consent. Permission is subject to a Section 106 agreement being finalised for completion as soon as possible.

Abbeyfield films have put together a pre-demolition video and a demolition video showing the progress that has been made since the work started earlier this year.

Station Forecourt Improvements

The Station Forecourt project proposes to reconfigure the pedestrian, cycle and vehicle access, taxi bays and bus stops, car parking bays and overall layout.

  • Cabinet report approved the project on 10 December 2020
  • Funding agreements completed in February 2021, the design stage is being carried out and an engagement plan is being drafted
  • From August 2022, work will be underway to enhance Alton train station forecourt and create a more welcoming, attractive and accessible gateway to the town, with easier and safer access for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. This will mean that temporarily there will be fewer car parking spaces available.
  • Progress update - November 2022

    Improvement work to enhance Alton train station forecourt is making good progress and remains on-track for completion in March/April 2023.

    Improvement work is nearing completion and on track for April 2023. Network Rail contractors are on-site for six weeks from 1 March to completed planned maintenance work to the car park.

Wilsom Road

This site has been allocated within the Local Plan for B class employment land, planning permission has not yet been granted.

Magistrates Court Site

The Magistrates Site proposes a development of 43 retirement living apartments with communal facilities and car parking.

Planning permission was granted on 1 March 2021, demolition has begun on site.
