Council Tax discounts

Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to a discount on your Council Tax bill.

We also offer Council Tax support which could reduce your bill depending on your income and savings.

Property description Discount

Property occupied by one adult.

If you are entitled or no longer entitled to a 25% single person discount you can update your account online.


Unoccupied and unfurnished properties (including second homes) undergoing building work or major repairs.

50% for a maximum of 12 months

Unfurnished properties (including second homes)

If a property is unoccupied and unfurnished for 2 years or more, the amount of council tax due will increase to 150% (you will need to pay the normal bill plus half as much again).

This does not apply if your property is empty while you are serving in the armed forces, or it is an annexe to your main property.

Furnished second homes

No discount

Annexe used by a person living in the main property.


Annexe that is the main home of a relative of the council taxpayer of the main property. The relative can be a husband, wife, parent, child, step-child, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece.


Property with features essential for a disabled resident.

Variable discount

Where there is a resident carer or care-worker.

Variable discount

Property occupied solely by full time students/apprentices.


Property occupied by full time students/apprentices and one council tax payer.


Property occupied by full time apprentices/youth training trainees.


Property occupied by students and more than one council tax payer.

No discount

Property that is home to someone with a severe mental impairment.
