Charities reap the benefits of fund-raising walk

More than £10,500 has been passed on to local charities thanks to a fund-raising ramble around Petersfield.

The Charity Walk for Peace, held in May, saw 325 walkers walk a 4.5 mile route around the town.

The annual event was organised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Elders Association and East Hampshire District Council with the twin aims of fostering closer communities and raising money for good causes.

On Friday 5 October, nine local charities reaped the benefits and received cheques from East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds at a ceremony at Penns Place, Petersfield.

The charities were:

Fitzroy, £1,590
Challengers, £1,590
Artscape, £1,590
The Rosemary Foundation, £1,590
Homestart Butser, £848
Homestart Hampshire, £848
Age Concern Cowplain, £848
The Kings Arms, £848
Dementia Friends, £848

The walk is set to be held again in 2019 with more walkers expected to take part and more money to be raised.

Cllr Julie Butler, East Hampshire District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Customer Relations, said: “For such a new event raising £10,600 for local charities is an incredible achievement.

“The voluntary sector in East Hampshire is so important to our quality of life here and I am delighted that so many people came out to support these worthy charities last year. I am very ambitious about how many people will be taking part next year and I hope to we will raise even more money!”

Rafi Ahmad, Vice Chairman Charity Walk for Peace, said: “The organisation of the Charity Walk for Peace is amazing - the food, the signage, the marshalling and everything that goes into putting on a major event. And it also consolidates the special relationship between East Hampshire and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, which reaches its peak each year with Jalsa Salana.

“The charities that have benefited, both large, national organisations and smaller local charities, are representative of the extraordinary voluntary sector we’re fortunate to have here in East Hampshire, and it’s great that the proceeds from the walk are being shared by so many worthwhile causes.”
