East Hampshire District Council paid tribute to its former chairman Maurice Johnson.

Cllr Johnson, MBE, joined the council in 1987 to represent Medstead, at a time when he was the personnel director of an international firm of consulting engineers.

He held a number of offices within the council, including Deputy Leader in 1991 and Chairman of the Council in 1995/96.

He served as Portfolio Holder of Corporate Services in the council's first Cabinet, and as chairman of the Community Forum (Alton and surrounding villages).

Staffing and conduct matters were a recurring strand to Cllr Johnson’s time at the council and he sat on the Standards Committee as vice-chairman, the Appeals Committee, The Staff Joint Working Party, the Joint Governance Committee, the Licensing Committee, Joint Human Resources Committee and the Panels Review and Councillor Development Panel.

EHDC’s current chairman, Cllr Anthony Williams, said: “Maurice was an excellent councillor who served his residents with passion and commitment and he will be very sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
