East Hampshire District Council has paid tribute to former councillor Bob Ayer, who died on Thursday 30 July.
Bob was elected to the council in 1999 and served two wards, Petersfield St Peter’s and Petersfield Rother, before stepping down in 2019.
He worked on a wide range of committees and served as the Chairman of the Licensing Committee and as the Vice-Chairman of Planning and the Petersfield Area Community Forum.
In 2003 fellow councillors elected him to represent the council as its Chairman.
Cllr Richard Millard said: “Cllr Ayer was a diligent and dedicated councillor who stood up for what he believed was right.
“He loved Petersfield and the district and worked assiduously for the benefit of its residents.
“Everyone who worked with him and heard him speak in the council chamber knew Bob as an articulate and intelligent speaker, with the ability to be firm and forthright when circumstances demanded.
“Bob will be sadly missed and fondly remembered, and on behalf of the many staff and councillors that worked with him at EHDC I would like to convey our deepest condolences to Hilary and the family at this sad news.”
