In January 2025 senior officers and councillors from other authorities visited EHDC to review how we work, share their learning and challenge our operations.

The report the challenge team returned in March was overwhelmingly positive and full of praise for the council and its staff.

Among the comments made on EHDC by the peer team were:

  • clearly a council that can deliver on its priorities and strategies
  • a well-run and very competent council that is strong and sustainable
  • staff are motivated, passionate and focused on delivery

Corporate Peer Challenge reports highlight areas of good practice and identify areas for improvement and ongoing support.

Where recommendations for improvement have been made, an action plan has been drawn up to help meet these challenges.

What is a Corporate Peer Challenge?

Corporate Peer Challenge (CPC) is a highly valued improvement and assurance tool that is delivered by the public sector for the public sector.

It involves a team of senior local government councillors and officers undertaking a comprehensive review of key finance, performance and governance information. The team spent three days at East Hampshire District Council  to provide robust, strategic, and credible challenge and support.

Challenges form a key part of the improvement and assurance framework for local government. They are underpinned by the principles of sector-led improvement put in place by councils and the Local Government Association (LGA) to support continuous improvement and assurance across the sector.
