Everyone has a legal 'duty of care' to ensure their household or business waste is disposed of correctly.
You can be prosecuted even if your waste is fly tipped by someone you have paid to take it away.
If it's your waste, it's your responsibility.
What is the right way?
To dispose of items not collected by your household refuse and recycling collections, you could:
- Sell or donate your unwanted items so others can use them.
- Book an appointment at one of Hampshire County Council’s waste recycling centres and take your waste there.
- Pay an approved licensed waste carrier and sign a waste transfer note handing over responsibility to them.
- Pay for our bulky waste collection service.
What can go where?
If you have something to dispose of, but you’re not sure where will take it, check out Hampshire County Council’s waste finder. It has details of what you can do with a wide range of materials, from asbestos to mercury thermometers to yoghurt pots.
More about our bulky waste collection service
Our bulky waste collection service will take most household items (see our website for prices and more detail) but will not collect:
- glass and furniture with glass panels
- commercial or trade waste
- waste from property refurbishment (including fitted items such as whole bathroom suites, kitchen cupboards and fitted wardrobes)
- hazardous waste, such as vehicles or similar
- batteries and paints
- building materials, fixtures and fittings
- paving slabs, bricks, rubble, soil and trees
- garage doors
- gym equipment
If you have any of these items, you’ll need to find a specialist licensed waste carrier. Once you find someone, remember to check that they’re registered and get the right paperwork.
