Reduction in fly tipping is progress, but we won’t stop now

Fly tipping is a crime. If you dump waste in East Hampshire you will be prosecuted

The latest figures from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) show a 17% reduction in reported fly tipping in East Hampshire.

The total for April 2023 to March 2024 was 1,214 with the total for the previous year at 1,415.

Councillor Tony Costigan, East Hampshire District Council portfolio holder responsible for neighbourhood quality, said:

“Fly tips are a blight on the beautiful environment of the district. We have a zero-tolerance approach to fly tippers and people disposing of their waste irresponsibly.

“This improvement is great news, but every incidence of fly tipping has a negative impact on the district. Not only can fly tips pollute their surrounding area and damage local wildlife, but there is a significant cost to the council of removing them.

“The reduced total still averages out at more than three fly tips each day and we will continue to hunt fly tippers down and prosecute where possible.

“The best way to reduce fly tipping is for residents of East Hampshire and neighbouring areas to use an approved waste carrier to dispose of their bulky waste.”

How can you avoid your waste being fly tipped?

If you have rubbish you need to dispose of, book a trip to the tip (Household Waste Recycling Centre) or contact an approved waste carrier (don’t fall for people knocking on your door).

When someone takes away your waste, you should get a waste transfer note as a receipt to show who took it. That way, if it is fly tipped, you’ll be able to show you did everything you could to ensure it was disposed of correctly.

You could also use our bulky waste collection service.

How do you report a fly tip?

If you see someone in the process of fly tipping, please phone the police on 101.

If the fly tip is blocking the road, please contact Hampshire County Council.

Please be aware that fly-tips can contain dangerous and hazardous materials, so for your own safety we ask you not to touch any tip you may find. Also, please do not remove anything from the fly tip as this could compromise any prosecution that may result from our investigation.
