As temperatures begin to drop, EHDC staff are making sure homeless people in East Hampshire have the support and assistance they need to keep them safe during the coldest periods.
With winter months now upon us, we are working with the local homeless charity Two Saints on our 'Winter Plan' – to increase outreach services, provide essential health and welfare support, and provide emergency accommodation, to those experiencing homelessness.
Two Saints support rough sleepers all year round, but this plan has been drafted to ensure no one has to sleep rough in freezing temperatures.
East Hampshire has very few rough sleepers. And our officers are regularly in touch with those that we are aware of, to make sure they have access to the support they need, such as a warm shower, hot food or the use of a washing machine.
However, when the weather turns more extreme and temperatures fall to 0°C or below, we activate SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol), which offers emergency shelter for anyone who is confirmed to be sleeping rough.
Do you know of a rough sleeper?
If you know of a rough sleeper in your neighbourhood, you can let us know through the website Streetlink
By alerting us in this way we can contact the rough sleeper and offer any support and assistance to them.
You do not have to have their name or have spoken to them yourself, but you must believe they are rough sleeping. Please respect their privacy while alerting us.
The information you provide will be reported to our Housing Services team, who will arrange for the rough sleeper to be approached. We will be able to link them with local services and offer them advice and assistance.
However, if you think that the person is in immediate risk of harm or danger or needs urgent medical attention, please call 999.
Are you rough sleeping?
If you are sleeping rough please contact the Housing Solutions team on 01730 234415 or email ehdchousing@easthants.gov.uk for advice and assistance. We work closely with Two Saints who provide a rough sleeper outreach service and we will all work together to explore your housing options and offer support.
