From ducks to diggers – amphibious excavator cleans up Buriton Pond

Buriton pond has been cleared of silt and weeds with the help of a floating digger.

The bouyant bulldozer has been crucial in scooping more than 200 cubic metres of silt from the pond, making it a healthier home for native species.

The silt was re-used to create an island as a haven for local wildlife. Some of the larger carp have also been removed and rehomed as they prey on the smaller fish.

Cllr Robert Mocatta, EHDC Portfolio Holder for Prosperity and Regeneration, said: “I am used to seeing ducks bobbing about on Buriton Pond but it has been entirely new to see a 1.5 tonne digger moving around on the surface of the water!

“It is great to see all the silt that has built up over the last decade or so dredged up and then reconstituted into a small island where birds and aquatic mammals can take refuge.

“I am sure that when the planting on the island is complete in the early spring, the pond will be a beautiful and tranquil spot for visitors and villagers.”

The work has been funded by £35,000 of Government money drawn from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund which EHDC has secured through its Grow Up! campaign.

Grow Up! seeks to use Government money to invigorate the rural economy, re-connect people with the countryside and provide employment, education and volunteering opportunities to our residents.
