East Hampshire District Council has backed efforts to secure greater clarity and transparency about the Government’s controversial local government reorganisation decision for Hampshire and the Solent.
The council has written a letter of support to Hampshire County Council following its decision to pursue a judicial review of the Government’s chosen model for local government reorganisation.
East Hampshire District Council was a partner in the development of the four-unitary proposal that was submitted for consideration.
The council notes that advice provided to Ministers reportedly recommended the four-unitary option, making the Government’s decision to adopt an alternative approach a matter of significant interest to local authorities and residents alike.
Councillor Richard Millard, Leader of East Hampshire District Council, said: “EHDC shares the concerns raised by Hampshire County Council regarding both the process followed and the reasoning that underpins the Secretary of State’s decision.
“We strongly believe that Ministers are accountable for their decisions and the refusal to give proper reasons creates the requirement for these matters to be fully examined by the court and so we support the County Council’s efforts to seek legal clarity through the judicial review process.
“The decision on local government reorganisation will have long-term implications for residents, communities and public services across Hampshire.
“Given the significance of this decision, it is important that there is a clear understanding of how the final outcome was reached and the reasons for departing from the proposal reportedly recommended by officials.
“As a council that worked closely with partners to develop the four-unitary proposal, we believe it is reasonable to seek further clarity and assurance that the decision-making process has been robust, evidence-based and transparent.
“While we remain committed to working constructively with partners across Hampshire as reorganisation progresses, we recognise the importance of ensuring that decisions of this scale can be properly scrutinised.”
East Hampshire District Council will continue to engage constructively with local authority partners throughout the reorganisation process and remains focused on securing the best outcomes for local residents and communities.
EHDC is not a claimant, defendant or formal party to the proceedings and will not be directly involved in the litigation.
