Our objectives

In this section of the strategy, our goals are to:

  • To protect, enhance and restore important habitats and species in East Hampshire so that they can better respond to the challenges from climate change and other pressures
  • Support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture
  • Maintain and improve (if needed) the air quality in East Hampshire
  • To facilitate the planting of 120,000 trees across East Hampshire and further encourage planting to develop and provide a sustainable tree canopy within the district

Air Quality Strategy 2026-31

East Hampshire’s air quality is generally good and within current UK legal limits. However, evidence shows that long-term exposure to air pollution continues to affect residents’ lives, particularly people who are very young, old or have medical conditions.

As part of legislation, we have to publish an Air Quality Strategy to identify areas where air quality can be improved and highlight the importance of air quality to residents. Our air quality strategy was approved in July 2026.

The strategy focuses on four priority areas:

  • Raising awareness of the importance of air quality
  • Reducing health inequalities – so people aren’t disadvantaged by where they live
  • Reducing emissions
  • Improving the understanding of the impacts of particulates and indoor air quality.

The Liss Railway Biodiversity action plan

The Liss Railway Biodiversity Action Plan forms the basis of an ongoing work programme for the Liss Riverside Railway Walk.  Arcadian Ecology & Consulting Ltd were contracted by East Hampshire District Council in conjunction with South Downs National Park Authority to deliver this initial work.

The Action Plan is an initial report which will be amended and updated through time in line with site requirements over the coming period and as such is now a  ‘living document’ which is subject to further development, change and modification as you would expect operating a site such as this
